Killeen is located in Central Texas one hour from Austin and Waco, and three hours from San Antonio and Dallas and four hours from Houston. Killeen is in one of the fastest growing corridors in the nation. Founded in 1882 by the Santa Fe Railroads to serve as a shipping station for cattle and cotton, Killeen has become the home of the premiere military installation Fort Hood, the largest active duty armored post in America and one of the largest in the world. The Killeen Independent School District (KISD) is the largest school district between Dallas and Round Rock, encompassing Killeen, Harker Heights, Fort Hood, Nolanville, and rural west Bell County. It serves about 29,000 students in a metropolitan area that stretches about 400 square miles. As of 2005, KISD has thirty elementary schools (PK-5), eleven middle schools (6-8), four high schools (9-12), and six specialized campuses. KISD has been designated as a "Recognized District" from the Texas Education Agency, which distinguishes it as one of the best in the state of Texas.
